Kyrenia (Girne) is a beautiful old harbour town on the northern
coast of North Cyprus just a short 30 minute drive away from the
Cypriot capital city of Nicosia (Lefkosa). Kyrenia's charming and
tiny harbour, full of yachts and fishing boats, is framed by the
colossal hulk of its Crusader castle. With the backdrop of the
jagged mountains behind and the calm sparkling sea in front, the
harbour has an intoxicatingly serene atmosphere.
The horseshoe harbour at Kyrenia is one of the most beautiful
natural harbours in the world, with little restaurants nestled along
the edge dwarfed by the immense Byzantine castle that for so long
stood guard observing all who came from the see to rest in the peace
and tranquility of the harbour.
British tourists and travellers have had an affection for Kyrenia
for many years, writer Lawrence Durrell appreciated the natural
beauty of the old town so much that he bought a house in the nearby
mountain village of Bellapais
